Explore Detroit - B #atozchallenge

Come along with me and explore the beauty & general awesomeness of Detroit, A to Z !

Today we're going to check out the lovely Belle Isle.

This is a 900+ acre state park located in the Detroit River and home to many very fun and beautiful attractions.

Me & the hubby in front of the Scott Memorial Fountain.  Named for Detroit resident James Scott who bequeathed the funds for both this fountain and a statue of himself,  features 109 water outlets in the shape of human heads and animals, and colored light and water shows.
Ann Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory.
Includes a perennial garden, rose garden & lily pond.  The dome houses one of the largest orchid collections in the country donated by Anna Scripps Whitcomb in 1953.  Also the location of where my nephew proposed to his lovely wife!
Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse
This is the only lighthouse in the US built entirely of marble, and the 80 foot light and 11,500 candlepower makes it visible for 15 miles and an important navigational aid for freighters on Lake St. Clair. It is named after William Livingstone, a Detroit resident and president of the Lake Carriers Association from 1902-1925

There's also the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, The Belle Isle Nature Zoo, the Belle Isle Aquarium, a golf range, water park, a beach, athletic fields and also home an event you don't normally expect to see in a large metropolitan area....

  1. This has brought back memories to me of our visit to Belle Isle in 2016. A really impressive place to visit. But too many damned wasps!

  3. You have to wonder about a guy who leaves money to a city to build a fountain and a statue in his honor...
