Come along with me and explore the beauty & general awesomeness of Detroit, A to Z !
The Spirit of Detroit is a bronze sculpture dedicated in 1958, to represent hope, progress and the spirit of man.
He's located in front of the Coleman A Young Municipal Building, near Hart Plaza and the Riverwalk. The sphere in his left hand symbolizes God and there's a family in his right. The inscription on the wall behind him is from 2 Corinthians 3:17 “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty,” The seals of both the City of Detroit and Wayne County are above the inscription.
Fun fact - beginning in 1997 when the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup, the Spirit wore a Red Wings sweater in celebration. Since then, he wears the jersey of any local team (pro or college) who is in the respective playoffs. But there is a catch - said team must donate $25,000 for the care & maintenance of the Spirit.
Obviously not taken in the last 2 years.
Fun Fact #2 - in 2008 when the Wings won the Cup, the Spirit was undergoing restoration, so the next best thing happened...
