The Ambassador Bridge is an international link between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.
Here is a shot I took, standing on the Detroit Riverwalk in front of the Renaissance Center, looking south.
That's Windsor off to the left.
You can also see the Detroit Princess Riverboat on the far right.
Let's get a little closer!
Apparently, Windsor is the place to get the pretty pics from - they have a nice park along the river while Detroit is all private property.
I was personally interested to learn that the Ambassador Bridge was built (in 1929) before the Mackinac Bridge (in 1957)!!
The bridge is 7500 feet long - close to 1.5 miles. At the time it was built, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world.
Statistics show that more than 25% of all commerce between the US & Canada cross the Ambassador Bridge. There have been talks to either building a second span to the Ambassador, or building another bridge altogether. So far both plans have been shot down, due to typical greed. The bridge is owned by a private company, instead of by MDOT (Michigan Dept of Transportation) or the Canadian MTO (Ministry of Transportation)
My daughter lives just north of Detroit and she will know these bridges well. I must get there sometime as well.
ReplyDeleteI live about 20 miles north, too!. Now that I think about it, every time I've gone to Windsor, it's been thru the tunnel. I need to make a trip and take the bridge!
DeleteThat must be one crazy busy bridge! LoL It will be interesting to see, as it ages, how they chose to maintain it / expand it or, like you say, build a new one.
ReplyDeleteHappy A to Z! :)
It is very busy. I'm sure there are lots of us also watching to see how this pans out.
DeleteWow. Big bridge. I don't think I've ever crossed a bridge that big.

There is an annual marathon held in Detroit each year, and crossing into Windsor is part of it. I'll just watch - thanks!
