G - Going Postal

My Theme / Timeline

Being a postal clerk had it perks!

I was a favorite helper with the Naval Station Everett security detachment.  When they needed someone to help out with some training for their people, they like to ask me.  Besides being immensely useful to them, it was a lot of fun!

The first drill we did was in the base mail room (my office).  The scenario was a "retiree" was mad because his pension check hadn't come in.  So he pulls a gun and fires some shots.   I got to lie on the floor in a puddle of fake blood and scream my head off while security responded.  I guess they should have been concerned that the legal and personnel offices on either side of the mail room didn't know this was a drill and NOBODY called 911 when they heard gunshots & screaming!!

I also got to help out with their domestic violence training.  Myself and a guy who had just checked into their department were the actors.  We ran thru several different scenarios.  In one I was the one being violent to my "spouse".  Another, he was the violent one.  Another was drunk & disorderly, etc, etc.  Any situation that security might find themselves responding to in real life.

The base also had a joint training exercise with the Everett Police for drunk driving awareness.  This one was televised!  They brought in a mangled car and a bunch of us got to spend time with a makeup artist and were made up to fit our parts.  Obviously the casualties got more blood & gore, while the rest of us (like me!) got minor injuries.  This event got me a letter of appreciation from the commanding officer of the base!

  1. Oh my gosh, yeah I'm a little surprised that they didn't call the cops either!

    1. I don't know, but I sure hope that caused some additional training for THEM! As in what to do in case of emergencies in the building in general!

  2. Very worrying when people don't respond to alarms and gunshots!

    1. Oh, for sure! Up close, that gun shooting blanks sounded pretty real - I know I would be concerned!

    1. I screamed myself hoarse that day, too! The "retiree" actually out-ranked me but knew me well enough to joke around that if I didn't scream realistically, he was going to kick me!

  4. You do make the postal office on a ship sound a lot like a TV drama ~ except YOURS is real!

    1. Normally it was pretty dull and mundane day-to-day. I got lucky and always worked with a lot of great people, so that made it awesome.
