E is for Edmund Fitzgerald

Today we're heading north to the beautiful Upper Peninsula (da U.P. eh!)  17 miles off the coast of Whitefish Point, deep in Lake Superior we find the resting place of the
Edmund Fitzgerald.

We all know from the song, that the Fitzgerald sank in a nasty storm on November 10, 1975 with all 29 crewmen lost.  No one knows exactly what caused the freighter full of iron ore to sink, but the storm with 45 knot winds and 30 foot waves surely played a major factor in it.

From our visit 9/2012

Whitefish Point Light Station is the location of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, a very eerie place to visit.

The bell from the Fitzgerald was recovered & restored in 1995 and is permanently on display in the Shipwreck Museum.

Sheesh - I can't talk about the Edmund Fitzgerald without including the song!!

    1. I like that version of it, since it includes the radio transmissions from the other ship in the area.
